NI Recommends the NI PXI-8119

The NI PXI-8109 is a high-performance Intel Core i7-620M processor-based embedded controller for use in PXI systems. With the 2.66 GHz base frequency, 3.33 GHz (single-core Turbo Boost) dual-core processor, and dual-channel 1066 MHz DDR3 memory, this controller is ideal for processor-intensive, modular instrumentation, and data acquisition applications.

Dual-Core Processor
The PXI-8109 includes the dual-core Intel Core i7-620M processor. Dual-core processors contain two cores, or computing engines, in one physical package. They can simultaneously execute two computing tasks, which is advantageous in multitasking environments such as Windows 7, where multiple applications are running simultaneously. Two applications can each access a separate processor core at the same time, which improves overall performance.

With the implicit code parallelism of NI LabVIEW graphical system design software, an application can split separate tasks into individual threads. A dual-core processor can simultaneously execute two of these generated threads. For those applications that are not strategically programmed for multicore processors, Intel introduced Turbo Boost technology to provide performance benefits for all types of applications without the application being optimized for multicore processors. It can significantly reduce test times for applications that are processor-intensive.

In-ROM Diagnostics
To improve the serviceability of the PXI-8109, you can quickly access in-ROM diagnostics for the hard drive and memory without requiring external third-party tools. By running these diagnostics, you can determine if you need to replace the hard drive or memory. The controller design allows for quick field replacement of critical components such as the hard drive and the memory without affecting the warranty. To ease the process of purchasing spare components, hard drive and memory upgrades are available with the PXI-8109. Combining all these features significantly improves PXI-8109 serviceability.
