The NI PXI-6683 and PXI-6683H timing and synchronization modules synchronize PXI and PXI Express systems using GPS, IEEE 1588, IRIG-B, or PPS. PXI-6683 modules also help synchronize the system with the system time of a real-time system. They can generate triggers and clock signals at programmable future times and timestamp input events with the synchronized system time. The PXI-6683 modules feature an onboard TCXO that can be disciplined to GPS, IEEE 1588, IRIG-B, or PPS for long-term stability. They also help route clock signals and triggers with low skew within a PXI chassis or between multiple chassis, providing a method for synchronizing multiple devices in a PXI system.

The PXI-6683 features a full PXI connector to offer complete PXI timing slot functionality. The PXI-6683H is designed to allow installation in a hybrid slot in a PXI Express system. This means some of the PXI timing slot features are not available in the PXI-6683H. Refer to the list below for the features supported by each variation of the PXI-6683 modules. If a PXI Express system requires synchronized low-skew triggers (star triggers) or a disciplined 10 MHz clock, the PXI-6683H can be combined with an NI PXIe-667x timing module to provide this functionality.

These modules work with the 2008 version of IEEE 1588, also known as IEC 61588:2009.

The PXI-6683 and PXI-6683H can help you:

- Generate future-time triggers and clocks based on a synchronized timebase
- Timestamp input events based on a synchronized timebase

PXI-6683 features only:
- PXI slot 2 star trigger access (input/output)
- Overdrive PXI backplane 10 MHz clock with disciplined TCXO or with 10 MHz clock at CLKIN
