Description

Transform the PSG into a flexible noise source

Option 403 will quickly and conveniently transform the PSG into a flexible additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) source with a few simple keystrokes. The calibrated noise software provides two modes of operation: real-time and arbitrary waveform playback. Real-time mode generates truly uncorrelated noise with a noise bandwidth that can be continuously varied up to 80 MHz. Arbitrary waveform playback mode enables the generation of a repeatable noise sequence with a variable bandwidth up to 15 MHz.

Easily and accurately add calibrated AWGN to PSG signal creation software

The calibrated noise software also enables simple and accurate addition of calibrated noise to the following optional signal creation software:

  • Option H00, W-CDMA FDD
  • Option H01, cdma2000 and IS-95-A
  • N7613A, Signal Studio for IEEE 802.16-2004 (WiMAX)

The noise power is precisely adjusted by setting Eb/No, Ec/No, or C/N directly from the channel setup menus in the above software. The software automatically queries the properties of the selected reference channel to ensure the appropriate amount of noise is added when setting Eb/No and Ec/No.

Option 403 Calibrated Noise Software is independent of and incompatible with the N5115A-168 AWGN capability available with the Baseband Studio for fading solution. N5115A Baseband Studio for fading is capable of fading and/or adding noise to any signal originating from the baseband generator of the E4438C ESG.

Typical application

The calibrated noise software is recommended for flexible stand-alone AWGN generation and for setting signal-to-noise ratios directly within select signal creation software. The uncorrelated nature of the test stimulus is ideal for generating noise interference and is especially important for determining receiver performance. The arbitrary waveform playback mode provides a repeatable noise stimulus used to isolate and debug the cause of received bit errors under various signal-to-noise ratio conditions.

This option can be added as a product upgrade.
